What documents do you need for FICA in South Africa?
If you have ever opened a bank account, taken out a policy or signed up with a financial provider, you have been “FICA’d”. It is one of the most common reasons South Africans get asked for documents, and getting it right the first time saves a frustrating second trip. Here is what FICA actually requires.
What FICA is (in one sentence)
FICA is the Financial Intelligence Centre Act. It requires banks and other financial institutions to confirm who you are and where you live before they do business with you, as a measure against fraud and money laundering.
The two things they need to verify
- Your identity
- Your residential address
That is the whole job. Everything on the document list below exists to prove one of those two things.
Proof of identity
Any one of these usually works:
- South African Smart ID card
- Green ID book
- Valid passport (often used by non-citizens)
Proof of residential address
This is where most people get caught out. You need a document that shows your name and physical address, usually dated within the last three months. Commonly accepted examples include:
- A utility bill (water, electricity, rates)
- A municipal account
- A bank statement from another bank
- A retail or store account statement
- A lease or rental agreement
- A telephone or cellphone account
Requirements vary slightly between institutions, so if in doubt, ask your provider which documents they accept.
What if the bills are not in your name?
This is extremely common, especially if you live with family or rent informally. Most institutions accept:
- An affidavit confirming where you live, often together with
- The account holder’s proof of address and a copy of their ID.
Ask your bank for their exact requirement, because the wording of the affidavit sometimes matters.
A note on copies
For FICA, institutions generally need the original or a certified copy, not a phone photo. A digital copy is great for your own reference and for lower-stakes situations, but formal verification is stricter. We explain the difference in is a digital copy of your ID legally accepted in South Africa?
Make it painless next time
The reason FICA is annoying is that the documents are never where you need them. Keeping a secure, organised copy of your ID and proof of address on your phone means you always know your details and can produce a copy on the spot when a copy is accepted. Zari Vault keeps those copies encrypted and behind your fingerprint, not loose in your gallery.
