Green ID book vs Smart ID card: what you need to know
South Africa has been moving from the old green barcoded ID book to the newer Smart ID card for years. If you are wondering whether you still need to switch, and what you gain by doing it, here is a clear comparison.
The short version
- The Smart ID card is South Africa’s modern identity document: a secure, chip-based card.
- The green ID book is the older document that is being phased out.
- The green book has generally remained valid for now, but government has been actively encouraging everyone to switch to the Smart ID card, and the long-term direction is clear.
Why the Smart ID is better
The Smart ID card was introduced to fix the weaknesses of the paper book:
- More secure. It uses a chip and modern security features that are far harder to forge than a barcoded book.
- More durable. A card survives daily life in a wallet better than a paper book.
- Faster to verify. Institutions can check it more quickly and reliably.
For a document that unlocks your bank account and your identity, those security improvements matter.
Is my green book still valid?
For most everyday purposes the green book has continued to be accepted, but relying on a document that is being phased out is not a great long-term plan. If your book is old, worn, or you simply want the more secure option, switching is worthwhile, and it is the same process as a first application.
How to switch
Applying for a Smart ID to replace your green book follows the standard route: apply online through eHomeAffairs, or at a Home Affairs office or a participating bank branch, then attend for your biometrics. We cover the full process in how to apply for a Smart ID card in South Africa.
Once you have your Smart ID
Keep the physical card safe, and keep a secure personal copy on your phone for the everyday moments where you just need to show or quote it. Zari Vault stores that copy encrypted and behind your fingerprint.
