Lost your ID? How to replace it and get a temporary ID in South Africa
Losing your ID is stressful, partly because of the admin and partly because of the risk. Your ID is the key to your bank account and your identity, so a lost or stolen card is something to act on quickly. Here is a calm, step-by-step plan.
Step 1: Protect yourself first
Before the replacement admin, reduce the risk of someone misusing your identity:
- If your ID was stolen, report it to the police so there is a record.
- Consider alerting your bank so they can watch for suspicious activity.
- You can also register a protective alert with the Southern African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS), a free service that flags your identity to member institutions.
Being quick here is the best protection against identity fraud. Our guide on keeping your documents safe covers the warning signs to watch for.
Step 2: Apply for a replacement Smart ID
A lost ID is replaced by applying for a re-issue of your Smart ID card. You can do this:
- Online via the eHomeAffairs portal (ehome.dha.gov.za), then book a slot, or
- At a Home Affairs office or a participating bank branch.
A re-issue fee applies (fees change, so confirm the current amount on dha.gov.za). The process is the same biometric capture as a normal Smart ID application, which we cover in how to apply for a Smart ID card.
Step 3: Get a Temporary Identity Certificate if you need one
If you need proof of identity urgently while you wait for the new card, Home Affairs can issue a Temporary Identity Certificate (TIC). It is a short-validity document that stands in for your ID for many purposes. You apply for it in person at a DHA office, and a small fee usually applies.
What to bring
- Any supporting details you have of your ID number
- Proof of address may be requested
- The applicable fees
Avoid the next scramble
The worst part of losing an ID is not remembering your own ID number when you need it most. Keeping a secure copy on your phone means the number and a picture of the card are always to hand, even before the replacement arrives. Zari Vault stores that copy encrypted and locked behind your fingerprint, so it is safe even if your phone is not.
