Passport application and renewal in South Africa
A South African passport takes a bit of planning, especially around busy travel seasons. Whether it is your first passport or a replacement for an expiring one, here is how the process works and how to avoid the common mistakes.
First, the timing
- An adult passport is generally valid for ten years.
- South African passports are not ârenewedâ in the sense of extending an old one. When yours is expiring, you apply for a new passport.
- Apply well before you travel. Processing times vary, and leaving it late is the most common cause of a missed trip.
Where to apply
- Online via the eHomeAffairs portal (ehome.dha.gov.za), then book an appointment, or
- At a Department of Home Affairs office, or
- At a participating bank branch, which many travellers find faster.
The typical flow is: apply and pay online, book a slot, then attend in person for your photograph and fingerprints.
What to bring
- Your Smart ID card or green ID book
- Your current or expired passport, if you have one
- The application fee (fees change, so confirm the current amount)
- Photographs are usually taken at the office
Applying for a childâs passport
Childrenâs passports have extra requirements, typically including the childâs birth certificate and the consent of both parents or legal guardians. Because these rules are strict and travel with minors is closely checked, confirm the current requirements before your appointment.
Validity rules to check before you travel
Having a passport is not always enough. Many destinations require that your passport:
- Is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates, and
- Has a minimum number of blank pages for stamps and visas.
Always check the entry requirements of the country you are visiting, and confirm any visa you may need.
Keep your passport details handy (safely)
Your passport number comes up constantly when travelling: online check-in, visa forms, hotel bookings. Fishing the physical passport out every time is both a hassle and a risk of loss. A secure copy on your phone keeps the number available without exposing the document. Zari Vault stores it encrypted and behind your fingerprint, so it is there when you need it and protected when you do not.
