POPIA explained in plain language (and what it means for you)
You have probably seen āPOPIA compliantā on websites and consent forms without anyone explaining what it means. Here is the plain-language version, and why it matters to you as a South African.
What POPIA is
POPIA is the Protection of Personal Information Act. It came into full effect in July 2021, and it does two things:
- It gives you rights over your personal information.
- It places obligations on any organisation that collects or uses your personal information.
āPersonal informationā is broad. It includes your name, ID number, contact details, address, financial information, biometrics and more.
Your rights under POPIA
In plain terms, you have the right to:
- Know what personal information an organisation holds about you.
- Access that information and get a copy.
- Correct information that is wrong.
- Have it deleted when there is no good reason to keep it.
- Object to certain uses, such as direct marketing.
- Complain to the Information Regulator if an organisation mishandles your data.
What organisations must do
Any business that holds your data (POPIA calls them āresponsible partiesā) has to, among other things:
- Only collect information they actually need, for a clear purpose.
- Use it only for that purpose.
- Keep it secure and no longer than necessary.
- Tell you if a data breach puts your information at risk.
What it means for everyday South Africans
The practical upshot is that your personal information is not a free-for-all. Companies need a lawful reason to collect it, have to protect it, and have to answer to you and to the regulator if they do not. If a company is spamming you or holding data it should not, POPIA is the framework that lets you push back.
Privacy by design, not just a checkbox
The strongest form of privacy is when a service is built so that it cannot misuse your data in the first place. That is the approach behind Zari Vault: your documents are encrypted on your own device, and nothing is uploaded to a server, so there is no central pile of sensitive data to leak or misuse. You can read exactly how we handle information on our privacy policy.
Understanding your rights is the first step. For everything else about your documents, see our complete guide to South African identity documents.
Never get caught without your ID again
Zari Vault keeps your Smart ID, licence, passport and more encrypted on your phone, ready in 3 seconds. Free for your first 4 documents.
