Driver's licence renewal in South Africa: the complete guide
Your South African driving licence card is valid for five years, and renewing it is one of those tasks that is easy to forget until it is nearly too late. Licensing centres are busy and card production can take time, so the golden rule is simple: start early. Here is how the renewal works.
When to renew
- A driving licence card is valid for five years.
- You can usually renew from a few months before it expires, so there is no reason to wait.
- Driving on an expired licence is an offence. Renew before the expiry date to avoid fines and hassle at a roadblock.
Because card printing can run into backlogs, applying well ahead of expiry is the single best thing you can do.
Where to renew
You renew at a Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC). Several provinces and metros also offer online booking to reserve a slot and cut down queue time, so check whether your area has an online booking system before you go.
What to bring
Take the following to your appointment:
- Your current driving licence card
- Your ID document (Smart ID or green book)
- Proof of residential address (recent, usually not older than three months)
- ID photographs (some centres take the photo for you, some ask you to bring them)
- The renewal fee (fees vary by province, so check your local rate)
You will also complete a short eye test. This can be done at the centre, or you can bring a valid eye test certificate from an optometrist.
The temporary driving licence
Because the physical card can take several weeks to be produced, you can usually be issued a temporary driving licence that keeps you legal to drive while you wait for the new card. Ask for it at your appointment if it is not offered automatically, and keep it with you when you drive.
After renewal
Keep your new card in your wallet, and consider keeping a secure personal copy on your phone for quick reference. Remember that at a roadblock you must have the physical card and a displayed licence disc. Our guide on what documents to carry at a roadblock covers exactly what is required.
While you are sorting your vehicle admin, do not forget your vehicle licence disc renewal, which is a separate annual task.
