How to renew your vehicle licence disc in South Africa
Your vehicle licence disc is the little disc on your windscreen that proves your vehicle licence is paid and valid. It is renewed every year, and letting it lapse is one of the easiest ways to pick up a fine and accumulate penalties. Here is how to keep it current.
When to renew
- The disc is valid for one year and shows its expiry date.
- You can renew in the weeks before it expires, using the renewal notice (form MVL2) that is usually posted to you.
- There is generally a short grace period after the expiry date, but penalties and arrears start adding up if you let it run, so renew promptly rather than relying on the grace window.
Note that renewing your vehicle licence is separate from renewing your driving licence. They are two different things with two different schedules. Our driver’s licence renewal guide covers the other one.
Where to renew
You usually have several options:
- Online, through the national or your provincial licensing system (for example the NaTIS online service, where available)
- At a Post Office branch that offers the service
- At a vehicle licensing office
- Through some banking apps, in certain provinces
Online renewal is the easiest way to skip the queue where it is offered in your area.
What you need
- Your renewal notice (MVL2) if you received one (you can still renew without it)
- Your ID document
- Proof of address may be requested
- The renewal fee, which depends on your vehicle’s weight or type
What if you did not get a renewal notice?
You are still responsible for renewing on time even if the notice never arrived. Do not wait for the post. If it is close to your expiry date, renew using one of the methods above.
Keep your proof accessible
Once renewed, the disc goes on your windscreen, but it also helps to keep your vehicle documents organised and within reach. A secure copy of your ID and vehicle details on your phone means you are never scrambling at a licensing counter or a roadblock. Speaking of which, our guide on what to carry at a roadblock explains why a displayed, valid disc is one of only two legally required items when you drive.
